Atlantic
Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), approx
5 x 8 x 30" Embroidery on silk The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation is a tipping component of the climate system. Its projected to slowdown during the 21st century in response to increased atmospheric CO2 concentration. The AMOC is one of Earth's major ocean circulation systems. It redistributes heat on our planet and has a major impact on climate variability and change. The AMOC is dependent on subtle thermohaline density differences in the ocean, and major AMOC transitions have been implicated in millenial climate events during the last glacial period. There is evidence that the AMOC is presently in its weakest state for more than 1,000 years. Continuous direct AMOC measurements started in 2004 and longer term reconstruction is based on proxy data. Interesting articles include the journal Nature, Oceanus, the Guardian & Oceanography.. Other oil can graphs are here. |
